On the occasion of our monthly “Q-Talks” webinar of April we asked the over 300 participants to compile a simple questionnaire that attempted to better understand the biggest kit issues facing riders in summer conditions, from moisture management in humid climates to overheating to managing extreme temperature volatility to, quite simply, general health and comfort. Analyzing the results with his internal team, Q36.5’s founder and head of R&D, Luigi Bergamo, developed 5 outfit proposals which he believed represented the perfect solution to the specific combinations of problems listed by riders. Scroll through to have a look at the choices and understand Luigi’s thinking behind each combination of elements!

Look 1 High Variables & Unpredictable Weather
“This outfit serves to protect the rider from any and everything that highly variable and unpredictable summer weather conditions can throw your way. The Dottore Pro bib shorts and jersey combination offers the guarantee of perfect comfort, temperature stability across wide ranges of temperature and extremely fast drying times in case of rain. The light rain shell is an “upgrade” we recommend relative to the classic summer Air Vest or jacket for riders who make encounter more frequent wet or cool conditions. The taped seam construction and use of 10 000mm membrane rather than the 5000mm of the air vest offers more protection with same overall volume.”

Look 2: High Summer Hi-Tech Mountain Goatr
“This is the ultimate summer outfit for riders living in areas with extreme heat (>30°C) looking to use the pinnacle of Q36.5 technology both for aesthetic and functional reasons! The Dottore Clima range offers the same characteristics of support, versatility and fast drying times as our Dottore Pro range, calibrated for higher temperatures (or pro-intensity) with additional aerodynamic tuning not found on the Dottore Pro jersey. The light rain shell completes the “hi-tech” package with additional technology relative to the air jacket but with the same low volume. ”

Look 3: Easy Summer Hi-Tech
“A combination of Gregarius and Dottore elements (like our pro riders) form the basis of this outfit designed for serious riding in more gentle summer conditions. The Gregarius Pro jersey offers pro fit, drying times, breathability and aero-enhancements for cyclists riding at mid-high intensity but in less “perilous” conditions as well as offering more graphic possibilities. Dottore Pro bib shorts add a super hi-tech flourish. For riders susceptible to the cold or looking for extra cosiness we recommend the dottore hybrid vest.”

Look 4: Healthy Summer
“For a rider who is perhaps less “experienced” or doesn’t ride through winter and is looking to spend a lot of time riding in summer with friends in nice stable temperatures, but struggles to feel 100% comfortable and confident in his/her kit we recommend this “easy” outfit combining the comfort and neutral on-bike feel of the Gregarius Pro range with the super-helper Dottore Hybrid Vest that offers a feeling of extra cosiness compared to air vest, with only a slight volume penalty as well as allowing for much more efficient wicking than classic shells. A base layer is an essential requirement for this kind of rider.”

Look 5: Southern Hemisphere Humidity Special
“For all riders suffering in humid conditions where temperatures are not necessarily high but ventilation and dry air is hard to come by, we recommend the Gregarius Pro Jersey. Designed for cyclists riding at mid to high intensity in less perilous conditions, the jersey offers a pro fit combined with fast drying times, high breathability and subtle aero enhancements, while also allowing for greater graphic possibilities. Its lightweight construction promotes consistent air flow between body and jersey, helping the rider maintain a stable body temperature even when humidity makes evaporation more difficult. We recommend our lightest base layer (0) not just for increased wicking body surface area keeping you drier, but also for “cosiness” in moments where intensity decreases but the body remains wet. Dottore Clima bib shorts complete the package with their more open and ventilated structure whilst a simple Air Vest offers emergency protection in descents or unexpected summer showers."

Once you become a “research scientist”, sensitive to every minor modification to your outfit or local conditions,
the possibilities for testing and fine-tuning are endless. Changing clothing solutions from ride to ride, riding the climb one day with the jersey closed, the next open etc. become part of the joy of cycling, a sport that combines extraordinary physical effort with machine technology better than any other.”
